Japan E-Tourist Visa for Canada Citizens

From the slopes of Whistler to the powder snow ("Japow") of Niseko, the affinity between Canada and Japan is built on a shared love for winter sports and nature. Whether you are traveling from Vancouver's Pacific coast or Toronto's urban core, Japan remains a top destination for Canadians.

In 2026, the Japanese government has digitized the entry process for Canadian passport holders. The physical visa sticker is replaced by a digital system, allowing you to secure your Japan E-Tourist Visa entirely online without visiting the consulates in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, or the Embassy in Ottawa.

Quick Overview for Canadian Citizens

  • Visa Type: Japan E-Tourist Visa (Temporary Visitor)

  • Visa Fee: $70.00 USD (All-Inclusive)

Traveling from Canada to Japan (Flight Routes)

Flight logistics vary significantly depending on which side of Canada you depart from.

  • From Vancouver (YVR): The shortest and most popular route. Air Canada, JAL, and ANA operate daily flights to Tokyo (Narita/Haneda), taking only about 9–10 hours.

  • From Toronto (YYZ) & Montreal (YUL): These are long-haul flights, often exceeding 13–14 hours. Air Canada offers direct service, but many travelers connect via Vancouver or US hubs.

  • From Calgary (YYC): WestJet often connects via Narita, serving the Alberta region.

Critical Arrival Note: Japan is 13–16 hours ahead of Eastern Canada. We recommend landing with your "Visa Issuance Notice" cached on your phone, as you will likely be battling jet lag upon arrival.

Financial Insights: CAD to JPY

The Canadian Dollar (CAD) and Japanese Yen (JPY) exchange rates fluctuate, but banking habits differ.

  • Debit Cards: Your RBC, TD, Scotiabank, or CIBC debit cards usually work at 7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs. Look for the "International" symbol.

  • Credit vs. Cash: While Canadians tap their cards for everything, Japan is cash-heavy. Small izakayas and ticket vending machines often only take Yen cash.

  • Exchange: Avoid exchanging money at Canadian airports (high fees). Withdraw Yen upon arrival in Japan for better rates.

Visa Payment: Our portal processes the $70.00 USD fee securely. Your Canadian bank will automatically convert the CAD amount. See our Visa Types and Prices page for details.

Japan E-Tourist Visa Cost & Processing Time

We offer a transparent, fixed-fee structure for "Group A" applicants like Canadian citizens.

  • Standard Processing ($70.00 USD): Covers manual review of your itinerary and solvency proof.

  • Timeframe: 5 to 9 Business Days.

  • Refund Policy: Once the review process begins with the Japanese authorities, the fee is non-refundable. See our Refund Policy.

How to Apply for a Japan E-Tourist Visa

Applying is digital, but precision is required.

  1. Select Citizenship: Choose "Canada" on the application form.

  2. Upload Documents: Scan your Canadian Passport and a compliant photo.

  3. Secure Payment: Complete the $70 USD fee.

Note on Date Formats: Canada uses a mix of date formats. Japan strictly uses Day/Month/Year or Year/Month/Day. Ensure you enter your birth date correctly to avoid confusion.

Japan E-Visa Requirements for Canadian Passport Holders

Japan E-Tourist Visa FAQ for Canada Citizens

Can I bring Cannabis (Marijuana) to Japan?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. While cannabis is legal in Canada, it is strictly illegal in Japan. Possession leads to immediate arrest, imprisonment, and deportation. Do not travel with any cannabis products, including CBD oils.

Can I work as a ski instructor with this visa?

No. This is a tourist visa. If you want to work a ski season in Niseko, you must apply for a Working Holiday Visa (IEC). Working on a tourist visa is illegal.

Can I use a Canadian Temporary Passport?

Generally, no. The E-Visa system requires the biometric chip found in standard Canadian passports (5 or 10-year validity). Temporary white passports may be rejected by the e-gate system.

Is the visa valid for multiple entries?

The standard E-Tourist Visa is typically Single Entry for up to 90 days. If you plan to visit Korea or Taiwan and return to Japan, you generally need a new authorization.
