Flags of Japan and Hong Kong waving against a blue sky - Japan E-Tourist Visa guide for Hong Kong residents

Japan E-Tourist Visa for Hong Kong Residents

For Hong Kongers, Japan is often affectionately called a "second home." With the Japanese Yen at historic lows against the USD-pegged HKD, the urge to fly to Tokyo for a weekend of omakase or shopping in Shinjuku is stronger than ever.

In 2026, specific categories of Hong Kong residents (such as Document of Identity (HKDI) holders or those ineligible for visa waivers) must obtain a visa. Under Group B regulations, these applicants cannot apply individually directly to the MOFA website. Applications must be processed through an Authorized Partner Agency. Our platform acts as your digital concierge, managing this process via our accredited partners in Japan.

Quick Overview for Hong Kong Residents

  • Visa Type: Japan E-Tourist Visa (Temporary Visitor)

  • Target Audience: HK Document of Identity (HKDI) Holders / Visa-Required Residents

  • Processing Time: 9–15 Business Days

  • Application Method: Online (Processed via Authorized Partner in Japan)

Important Disclaimer: We are not affiliated with the Embassy or Government of Japan. We assist applicants by collecting documents and submitting them through authorized partner agencies accredited by the Japanese Government. The final decision rests solely with the Japanese authorities.

Traveling from Hong Kong to Japan (Flight Routes)

The HK-Japan corridor is one of the busiest in Asia, known for its frequent "Red-eye" flights.

  • HK Express (UO) & Peach: The budget kings. Many Hong Kongers take the overnight flight to Tokyo Haneda (HND) or Osaka (KIX), land at 5:00 AM, and start their day immediately to maximize time.

  • Cathay Pacific (CX) & JAL: Premium options offering multiple daily flights to Narita, Haneda, Sapporo, and Fukuoka.

  • Travel Time: A direct flight is approx. 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

Critical Arrival Note: Japan is 1 hour ahead of Hong Kong. Ensure you have your "Visa Issuance Notice" (displaying the "Issued" status) ready on your mobile browser. Do not rely on airport Wi-Fi; keep a screenshot just in case, but the live link is mandatory.

Financial Insights: HKD to JPY

Since the HKD is pegged to the USD, Hong Kongers enjoy massive purchasing power in Japan.

  • Octopus vs. Suica: Your Octopus Card does NOT work in Japan. However, like in HK, you can add a Japanese Suica or Pasmo card directly to your Apple Wallet and top it up using your HK credit card.

  • Cards: Visa/Mastercards issued by HSBC, Hang Seng, or Standard Chartered are universally accepted.

  • Cash: While you can tap your phone for trains, cash is still needed for small ramen shops or gachapon machines. Withdraw Yen at 7-Eleven ATMs.

Visa Payment: Our portal charges the $100.00 USD fee. You can pay using any international credit card. See our Visa Types and Prices page.

Japan E-Tourist Visa Cost & Processing Time

As a "Group B" applicant, your file undergoes a strict review process by our partners and the Japanese authorities.

  • Service Fee ($100.00 USD): This covers the Authorized Partner handling fee, document verification, and digital submission.

  • Timeframe: 9 to 15 Business Days.

  • Refund Policy: Applicant information is shared with authorized partner agencies for processing. Once the application is submitted to the agency, the service fee is non-refundable, regardless of the outcome. See our Refund Policy.

How to Apply for a Japan E-Tourist Visa

Since you cannot apply directly as an individual, our system bridges the gap.

  1. Select Citizenship: Choose "Hong Kong (HKDI/Visa Required)" on the application form.

  2. Upload Documents: Scan your Travel Document (HKDI or Passport), Photo, and HKID.

  3. Secure Payment: Complete the $100 USD fee.

  4. Partner Submission: We route your file to our authorized partner agency in Japan.

  5. Approval: Receive your digital "Visa Issuance Notice."

The Golden Rule: Ensure your photo has a white background and no glasses. Our experts review every file to prevent rejection before it reaches the authorities. You can Track Visa Status anytime.

Japan E-Tourist Visa FAQ for Hong Kong Residents

I hold a BNO or HKSAR Passport. Do I need this visa?

Generally, HKSAR and BNO passport holders are eligible for the Visa Waiver program (90 days visa-free) and do not need to apply for this E-Visa. This service is primarily for HK Document of Identity (HKDI) holders or those who have been specifically instructed to obtain a visa. Please check your eligibility.

Can I apply individually without an agency?

No. If you are in a category that requires a visa (like HKDI holders), regulations dictate that you must apply through an authorized travel agency. You cannot submit an application directly to the MOFA site yourself.

Do I need to print the visa?

No. A screenshot or PDF printout is invalid. You must display the "Visa Issuance Notice" on your mobile screen with a live internet connection at the immigration counter.

Is the visa valid for multiple entries?

The standard E-Tourist Visa processed via this channel is typically for a Single Entry. If you need a Multiple Entry Visa, you usually need to apply physically at the Consulate in Central, Hong Kong.
