Flags of Japan and the United Kingdom waving against a blue sky - Japan E-Tourist Visa for UK citizens

Japan E-Tourist Visa for United Kingdom Citizens

From the bustling streets of Shibuya to the ski slopes of Niseko, Japan remains a top-tier destination for British travelers. Whether taking a "Gap Year," visiting on business, or chasing cherry blossoms, the link between the UK and Japan is robust.

In 2026, the Japanese government has fully digitized the entry process for British passport holders. The physical visa sticker is replaced by a digital system, allowing you to secure your Japan E-Tourist Visa entirely online without visiting the Embassy of Japan on Piccadilly in London or the Consulate in Edinburgh.

Quick Overview for UK Citizens

  • Visa Type: Japan E-Tourist Visa (Temporary Visitor)

  • Processing Time: 5–9 Business Days (Standard)

  • Visa Fee: $70.00 USD (All-Inclusive)

  • Application Method: Online (Direct – Group A)

  • Validity: Single Entry (Up to 90 days stay)

For British citizens, the process is efficient. You can handle your travel authorization from home before heading to Heathrow. To begin, you can Apply for Japan Visa directly through our secure portal.

At Global E-Visa, we review every application against MOFA guidelines. We ensure your documents meet strict requirements—such as the "no glasses" photo rule—to guarantee a smooth approval.

Traveling from the UK to Japan (Flight Routes)

Since the closure of Russian airspace, flight times from the UK have increased, making route planning essential.

  • Direct Flights (LHR): British Airways, JAL, and ANA fly directly from London Heathrow to Tokyo (Haneda). Due to the detour (flying over the North Pole or Central Asia), flight times are now approx. 13–14 hours.

  • Indirect Options: Many travelers opt for Finnair (via Helsinki) or Emirates (via Dubai) to break up the long journey.

  • Time Difference: Japan is +9 hours ahead of GMT (or +8 hours during British Summer Time).

Critical Arrival Note: We recommend landing with your "Visa Issuance Notice" cached on your phone, as you will likely be battling jet lag upon arrival at Haneda or Narita.

Financial Insights: GBP to JPY

The British Pound (GBP) is generally strong against the Yen, giving UK travelers good purchasing power.

  • Challenger Banks: Cards like Monzo, Starling, or Revolut are essential for UK travelers to avoid non-sterling transaction fees. They work perfectly at 7-Eleven ATMs in Japan.

  • Cash is Necessary: Unlike London where you can tap for a coffee, Japan is cash-heavy. Rural areas often do not accept contactless payments.

  • Spending: Carry Yen cash for Suica/Pasmo card top-ups if you don't have them on your iPhone wallet.

Visa Payment: Our portal processes the $70.00 USD fee securely. Your UK bank will automatically convert the GBP amount. See our Visa Types and Prices page for details.

Japan E-Tourist Visa Cost & Processing Time

We offer a transparent, fixed-fee structure for "Group A" applicants like UK citizens.

  • Standard Processing ($70.00 USD): Covers manual review of your itinerary and solvency proof.

  • Timeframe: 5 to 9 Business Days.

  • Refund Policy: Once the review process begins with the Japanese authorities, the fee is non-refundable. See our Refund Policy.

How to Apply for a Japan E-Tourist Visa

Applying is digital, but precision is required.

  1. Select Citizenship: Choose "United Kingdom" on the application form.

  2. Upload Documents: Scan your British Passport and a compliant photo.

  3. Secure Payment: Complete the $70 USD fee.

  4. Approval: Receive your digital "Visa Issuance Notice."

Note on Middle Names: British passports often include middle names. You must enter your full name exactly as it appears on the passport bio-page to match the MRZ code.

The Golden Rule: Follow on-screen instructions precisely. Our experts review every file. You can Track Visa Status anytime.

Japan E-Visa Requirements for UK Passport Holders

To ensure approval, provide the following:

  • Valid British Passport: Must be valid for the duration of your stay.

  • Digital Photograph: White background. Strict Warning: Japan forbids glasses in visa photos. Even thin frames result in immediate termination.

  • Proof of Funds: A bank statement showing sufficient funds (approx. £1,500+) to cover your stay is recommended.

Japan E-Tourist Visa FAQ for UK Citizens

Can I apply if I have a criminal record (Caution)?

Japan is strict regarding criminal records. Even a police caution in the UK can be an issue depending on the severity. You must answer background questions honestly. Lying on the application is a serious offense.

I have a BN(O) Passport. Can I use this service?

British National (Overseas) passport holders are also eligible for the E-Visa system (Group A), similar to full British Citizens. Please select the correct nationality code when applying.

Does my GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) work in Japan?

No. The UK GHIC is only valid in the EU/Switzerland. It has zero validity in Japan. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance, as medical costs in Tokyo can be very high.

Is the visa valid for multiple entries?

The standard E-Tourist Visa is typically Single Entry for up to 90 days. If you plan to visit South Korea or Taiwan and return to Japan, you generally need a new authorization.
